World Handball 2023: France sweeps Saudi Arabia and qualifies for the main round

In search of a seventh world championship, the French team has easily disposed of Saudi Arabia for its second game of the preliminary round, Saturday (41-23).

The qualification for the main round of the World Championship is already assured. After their victory in the pain, Wednesday, against Poland, the French logically dominated Saudi Arabia, during their second game of the World Cup (41-23), Saturday, January 14, in Katowice (Poland).

Facing an opponent very far from their level – no player of the squad is professional – the French played an offensive game and gave a score to their opponents. The copy is clean but not perfect. The Olympic champions multiplied the errors of inattention and the floating, allowing Saudi Arabia to come back to the score in the first period (12-10, 17th). But the French did not really have the confidence to take the lead at the break (23-14), as they suffocated the Saudi defense (nine goals in eight minutes).

The Tricolores offered a second period of the same kind, between flashes of genius, like Kentin Mahé, who scored a superb goal between kung-fu and roucoulette (35th), and gross errors. However, their offensive superiority and their lead allowed coach Guillaume Gille to rotate the squad: “The boys had the merit of being serious, with a score that grew throughout the game. That allowed us to distribute the playing time well. In addition, we did not lengthen the infirmary, so it is a beautiful evening”. This will give us a lot of confidence before facing Slovenia, where the scenario should be quite different, on Monday January 16th, at 6 pm.
